Tabulate-Rugose Coral Community, Buck Creek Quarry Member, E. Iowa. (Silurian of the United States)

Where: Iowa (42.0° N, 91.0° W: paleocoordinates 23.1° S, 53.5° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Buck Creek Quarry Member (Scotch Grove Formation), Wenlock (433.4 - 427.4 Ma)

• "probable early Wenlockian age" "...these collections were derived from residual silicified geests, and hence represent accumulations from a stratigraphic interval of unknown thickness. Nevertheless, the coralline fauna is also known from subjacent dolomite strata at the type locality, and the co-occurrence of diverse rugosans with Pentameroides and Costistricklandia is verified from individual slabs in the geests bearing both brachiopods and abundant corals as well as from subsurface core penetrations."

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal ramp; shelly/skeletal wackestone and shelly/skeletal packstone

• "varied [coral] morphologies probably represent in part a hydrodynamic response to less agitated environments....Pentameroides suggests BA 3...Available evidence favors BA 3...Storm currents probably winnowed mud and concentrated skeletal grains on an episodic b asis...not geographically widespread...probably represents a localized coraline bank or biostromal facies."

•SEP environmental call based on given description and same vol. page 807.

• "occurs in skeletal wackestone to packstone lithologies, but grain abrasion typically absent and preservation of silicified faunas is excellent."

Preservation: replaced with silica

Collection methods: I have combined two localities with abundance data in table 50.15.
